Designed for elementary students, especially in grades 2 through 5, the Kimika & Kalynn SEL ELA Literacy program combines engaging stories with structured literacy lessons, SEL activities, classroom discussions, student reflection pages, writing prompts, vocabulary development, and counselor-friendly activities. It can be used during ELA instruction, advisory periods, small-group counseling, MTSS Tier 2 support, after-school programming, or character education lessons.

Each book focuses on a real-life situation that children can relate to. Topics include moving to a new home, making friends, learning to share, standing up to bullying, telling the truth, caring for a pet, dealing with grief, understanding cultural differences, practicing kindness, building confidence, staying safe online, and learning about family traditions.

The program gives teachers and counselors a practical way to connect reading comprehension with emotional growth. Students are not only asked what happened in a story but also how characters felt, why they made certain choices, what they could have done differently, and how the lesson connects to their own lives.

Rationale
Students need strong literacy skills, but they also need the motivational tools to manage frustration, communicate clearly, build friendships, make responsible choices, and understand others. Many children struggle academically because they are also struggling socially or emotionally. The Kimika & Kalynn Sisters SEL ELA Literacy Program addresses both needs simultaneously.

Stories are a powerful teaching tool because students can examine difficult situations through characters before applying the lesson to themselves. A child may not immediately want to talk about being left out, feeling nervous, lying, or being afraid, but they can discuss what characters Kimika or Kalynn experienced. That creates a safe opening for reflection and conversation.

The program also gives students access to positive, relatable African American main characters in everyday family-centered stories. Representation matters. Students benefit when they see characters who reflect diverse families, cultures, personalities, and learning styles. Kimika, the creative artist, and Kalynn, the curious young scientist, show that children can be different and still deeply connected. The program supports classroom instruction by naturally connecting each story to reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary, and evidence-based discussion. It supports counseling work because each lesson gives students language for emotions, relationships, decision-making, and self-awareness.
